Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: In vielen Ländern ist das Internet als Infrastruktur für den rasant voranschreitenden Electronic Commerce (elektronischer Geschäftsverkehr) bereits so gut ausgebaut, daß Informationen innerhalb weniger Sekunden weltweit verfügbar sind und wirtschaftliche Transaktionen elektronisch von jedem beliebigen Punkt aus ohne Ortsveränderung getätigt werden können. Diese Entmaterialisierung bzw. Virtualisierung der Wirtschaftsprozesse löst bisher geltende räumliche und zeitliche Abhängigkeiten weitgehend auf. Langfristige Veränderungen der Raumstruktur erscheinen daher unausweichlich, insbesondere dann, wenn aus dem technisch induzierten, wirtschaftlichen Phänomen Electronic Commerce ein gesellschaftliches wird. Am Beispiel der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zeigt die Arbeit diesen durch Electronic Commerce verursachten räumlichen Strukturwandel und dessen Voraussetzungen aus der bislang weitgehend unbeachteten wirtschaftsgeographischen Perspektive auf. Der Fokus richtet sich hierbei auf die Aspekte 'Standortwahl von Unternehmen und privaten Haushalten', Verkehr, Mobilität, Siedlungsstruktur, Flächenbedarf, 'Bedeutung von Städten und Regionen' sowie 'Verhältnis zwischen realen und virtuellen Märkten bzw. physischem und virtuellem Verkehr'. Da auf das zukünftige Raumwirkungspotential des Electronic Commerce keine bekannte Theorie anwendbar ist, werden aus den in der Arbeit zusammengetragenen und aufbereiteten Informationen zu Wirkungszusammenhängen, Trends und Prognosen als Grundlage für die weitere wissenschaftliche Diskussion 20 Hypothesen abgeleitet.
