Esta obra tiene como protagonista al detective Crispín Pantaleón, quien ya aparecía en tres de los seis relatos que componían el anterior libro del autor: El preso y el que está muerto... y otros relatos. Ahora se mueve entre dos universos muy diferentes: la Cuba de los meses anteriores al triunfo de la revolución y el Madrid del tardofranquismo, cuando al general Franco le quedaba poco para expirar. En la primera parte del libro, El alfil de Capablanca, nuestro héroe viajará a Miami para encontrarse con un viejo amigo y se las verá con coleccionistas de arte carentes de escrúpulos, conocerá a una enigmática mujer y tratará con Camilo Cienfuegos y el Che Guevara. La segunda parte, quince años más tarde, le llevará a medirse con la cúpula del Partido Comunista de España en la clandestinidad, los Guerrilleros de Cristo Rey con Billy el Niño a la cabeza y con subastadores fraudulentos de objetos únicos. También desfilarán por sus páginas mandos de la Guardia Civil, directores de periódicos, la cantante Encarnita Polo y el pianista de jazz Tete Montoliú.
