El reino de las sombras y Los espejos de Tuzun Thune son dos de las obras más conocidas de Robert Ervin Howard, considerado uno de los creadores del llamado subgénero literario de «espada y brujería». Las dos aparecieron en la revista pulp Weird Tales en 1929 y en ellas el autor se centra en una época muy lejana en la historia del hombre, cuando los continentes conocidos como Atlantis, Lemuria y Mu se encuentran en los océanos y los hombres-serpiente prehumanos son los dominantes. El personaje principal es el rey Kull de Valusia, núcleo de un mundo mágico y asombroso que permite al lector desarrollar toda su fantasía. En vida del autor solo se publicaron El reino de las sombras y Los espejos de Tuzun Thune; otros nueve relatos y un poema adicional los dieron a conocer más adelante sistematizadores de la obra de Howard.
