O. Henry (Greensboro, EE.UU., 1862?-?Nueva York, 1910) es el seudónimo de William Sidney Porter, cuyos relatos con finales sorprendentes e impactantes le dieron una gran fama, tanto que se popularizó la expresión «un final a lo O. Henry» (an O. Henry ending). Junto con otros escritores de la talla de Poe, Harte o Twain, se le considera uno de los creadores de la proverbial short story norteamericana. Muchos de sus cuentos están ambientados en Nueva York, ya que para Henry cada uno de los habitantes de esta gran ciudad tenía «una historia digna de ser contada». Fue hijo de un médico, Algernon Sidney Porter, y después de que a los tres años de edad su madre muriera de tuberculosis, se trasladaron a la casa de la abuela paterna, donde comenzó su afición por la lectura. Después de completar la educación elemental empezó a trabajar como contable en la farmacia de un tío suyo y en 1881 consiguió el título de farmacéutico. En 1895 se mudó a Houston, donde empezó sus colaboraciones periodísticas en el Daily Post, y un año después, tras una confusa acusación de robo, huyó a Honduras, país en el que estuvo hasta 1898. A su regreso entró en la cárcel por un periodo de tres años y fue allí donde empezó a publicar algunos relatos con seudónimo. Ya en libertad se instaló en Nueva York, una ciudad que le inspiró la mayor parte de sus relatos, muchos de los cuales, protagonizados por gente sencilla, se consideran modelos del relato breve, concentrando toda la acción en un final sorpredente que impacta al lector. Para recordarlo se creó el Premio «O. Henry» en su país, un galardón con el que se ha distinguido a autores tan importantes como William Faulkner, John Updike, Raymond Carver o Saul Bellow.
