El Decamerón, escrito entre 1249 y 1353, es considerado el primer libro de cuentos de la literatura occidental. Los cuentos son relatados por un grupo de diez jóvenes que se retiran a las afueras de Florencia para protegerse del contagio de la peste que asolaba la ciudad. Durante diez días, cada uno de ellos tiene que gestionar una jornada y todas sus actividades; entre estas destacas especialmente las reuniones donde, para pasar el tiempo, los presentes narran un cuento. Los temas son muy variados, abundan los licenciosos, pero también las historias sentimentales, trágicas y moralizantes. El Decamerón es un libro que provocará en el lector tanto la risa como la tristeza, la reflexión y la pasión, el deleite por lo sensual y el respeto por lo sagrado, y que por encima de todo le hará experimentar el verdadero placer de la buena lectura.
