Sobre y en el borde de la plataforma continental en el Golfo de Salamanca, Caribe colombiano, hay fondos duros dispersos con variada fauna y flora coralina, denominados en su conjunto Banco de las Ánimas. Para ubicar y caracterizar la geomorfología y biodiversidad, se realizaron sondeos acústicos, buceo e inspecciones con un vehículo operado remotamente. Se exploró un área de topografía uniforme de poca pendiente y de 16 m de profundidad promedio, donde se identificaron tres estaciones de fondos duros de menos de 50 m de diámetro. Los montículos están conformados por bloques, lajas y cascajo de arenisca, colonizados por corales masivosdispersos y por abundante biota arrecifal. Rodeados de fondos blandos, son como oasis que atraen gran cantidad de organismos, sustentando una elevada biodiversidad, lo que justifica considerar su manejo y conservación. Para los peces arrecifales se observó una cifra elevada de especies (85), lo cual constituye una reserva de la riqueza marina. 10
