Dieses Werk ist der authentische Bericht einer Frau, die in den 1920er Jahren durch den amerikanischen Kontinent reiste. Ihre Sozialreportagen aus Amerika hat Maria Leitner in der Reportagesammlung Eine Frau reist durch die Welt zusammengefasst, die 1932 im Berliner Agis-Verlag erschien und sofort starke Beachtung fanden. 1934 wurde das Buch ins Polnische übersetzt und zwei Jahre später in der Sowjetunion wiederholt als Sprachübungstext herausgegeben. Maria Leitner (1892-1942) war eine deutschsprachige ungarische Journalistin und Schriftstellerin. Seit etwa 1920 benutzte sie einen Pass mit dem Geburtsdatum 22. Dezember 1893 und verwendete diese Angabe offiziell bis an ihr Lebensende.
