Wenn die flüchtigen Bestandteile des Rohöls in den Tiefen der Erde im Laufe der Zeit durch Verwitterung verdampfen, bleibt eine glänzend schwarze Substanz zurück, die Bitumen genannt wird. Bitumen ist ein ungefährliches, natürlich vorkommendes Kohlenwasserstoffharz, das in vielen Industriezweigen verwendet wird, z. B. im Straßenbau, für Polituren, Druckfarben und Lacke. Es wird auch zur Isolierung von Tanks, Rohren und sogar Formteilen verwendet. Bitumen wird in Ölbohrschlamm und Zement, Asphaltmodifikatoren, Gießereisandzusätzen und einer breiten Palette chemischer Produkte verwendet. Die Zugabe von speziell behandeltem Bitumen zu wasserbasierten Bohrspülungen minimiert Auswaschungen durch Stabilisierung von Schiefergestein und versiegelt hochgradig durchlässige Sande, während Drehmoment und Widerstand reduziert werden. Die verschiedenen Formen von Bitumen in Bezug auf Reinheit und Lebensdauer sind flüssig, halbfest, fest und mit unterschiedlicher Löslichkeit in Tetrachlorkohlenstoff. Obwohl Bitumen und Kohle unterschiedlich sind, ähnelt Bitumen in einigen physikalischen Eigenschaften der Kohle oder dem Teer, so dass es als getrocknete Form des Teers eingeführt wurde. Einige Formen von Bitumen können direkt für allgemeine Anwendungen verwendet werden, während andere vor der Verwendung verarbeitet werden müssen.
