Questo libro riporta le attività svolte presso il Centro di Studi Superiori di Caxias dell’Università Statale del Maranhão - CESC/UEMA, con il finanziamento della Fondazione per il sostegno alla ricerca e allo sviluppo scientifico e tecnologico del Maranhão - FAPEMA. Questa ricerca è stata condotta durante il mio soggiorno nel programma post-laurea in Biodiversità, Ambiente e Salute. Sotto la supervisione del professor Francisco Laurindo da Silva, la ricerca si è concentrata sulla realizzazione di test per verificare l’efficacia di piante utilizzate dalla comunità contro i batteri Gram-negativi, ma con uno scopo antibatterico non ancora dimostrato. Il lavoro è stato svolto nel laboratorio di microbiologia del CESC/UEMA. È stato necessario contare sull’aiuto di collaboratori nelle attività quotidiane del laboratorio, come il tecnico di laboratorio FACID Esmeralda e le accademiche Francilene de Sousa Vieira e Gleciane Costa de Sousa. Questa ricerca è estremamente importante visto il gran numero di persone che stanno diventando sempre più resistenti agli antibiotici disponibili sul mercato.
