Il tema della trasmissione asimmetrica dei prezzi si riferisce all’osservazione che l’aumento dei costi marginali porta ad aggiustamenti dei prezzi al consumo più rapidi rispetto alla diminuzione dei costi marginali. Le variazioni del regime dei costi marginali, e di conseguenza dei prezzi al consumo, innescano una risposta da parte dei consumatori, che si aspettano prezzi più bassi o più alti in base al prezzo di riferimento del periodo precedente e decidono quindi di diminuire o aumentare il loro comportamento di ricerca, rispettivamente. Ciò consente alle imprese di applicare prezzi più lontani o più vicini ai costi marginali, determinando prezzi relativamente più alti o più bassi per i consumatori.L’aumento della trasparenza informativa senza modificare il regime dei costi marginali dovrebbe quindi portare anche a una riduzione dei prezzi per i consumatori, poiché ottenere informazioni diventa più economico per il consumatore marginale. Tuttavia, l’aumento della trasparenza delle informazioni rende anche più facile per le imprese monitorare le strategie di prezzo dei loro rivali. Ciò rende possibile la collusione tacita, poiché le deviazioni da un accordo tacitamente collusivo possono essere efficacemente individuate e punite, scoraggiando i comportamenti scorretti. Di conseguenza, l’accesso alle informazioni sui prezzi è una componente fondamentale.
