Les chaînes élastomères sont des copolymères de polyuréthane fréquemment utilisés dans les opérations d’orthodontie en raison de leur polyvalence. Elles sont efficaces, colorées et confortables pour les patients. Depuis les années 1960, les chaînes élastomères sont utilisées dans les traitements orthodontiques pour la fermeture des espaces étendus, la correction de la ligne médiane, la fermeture des espaces d’extraction et le déplacement des dents incluses. Andreasen et Bishara ont été les premiers à décrire comment ces chaînes élastiques pouvaient être utilisées pour fermer des espaces mineurs entre les dents.En raison de leurs qualités viscoélastiques, les chaînes élastomères sont sujettes à une diminution de la force au fil du temps. Cette dégradation de la force est influencée par plusieurs facteurs, notamment la température de la cavité buccale, les fluctuations du pH, la présence de radicaux libres et l’utilisation de bains de bouche. Ces facteurs contribuent collectivement à la dégradation de la force exercée par les chaînes.
