As cadeias elastoméricas são copolímeros de poliuretano frequentemente utilizados em operações ortodônticas devido à sua versatilidade. São eficazes, coloridas e confortáveis para os pacientes. Desde a década de 1960, as cadeias elastoméricas têm sido empregadas na terapia ortodôntica para fechamento de espaços generalizados, correção da linha média, fechamento de espaços de extração e recolocação de dentes impactados. Andreasen e Bishara foram os pioneiros na descrição de como essas correntes elásticas poderiam ser usadas para fechar pequenos espaços entre os dentes.Devido às suas qualidades viscoelásticas, as cadeias elastoméricas estão sujeitas a uma diminuição da força ao longo do tempo. Esta degradação da força é influenciada por vários factores, incluindo a temperatura na cavidade oral, flutuações nos níveis de pH, a presença de radicais livres e a utilização de elixires. Estes factores contribuem coletivamente para a degradação da força exercida pelas cadeias.
