Esta investigação foi realizada para fornecer uma visão aprofundada sobre os efeitos sociais e ambientais da mineração de ouro no Gana, com especial atenção para Obuasi, no distrito de Adansi West, na região de Ashanti. Na investigação, foram selecionados aleatoriamente 100 inquiridos e foi utilizada uma análise descritiva para demonstrar os resultados. O estudo revelou que a mineração tem efeitos significativos (tanto positivos como negativos) na sociedade, no ambiente e, em grande medida, na população de Obuasi. O estudo recomenda que os mineiros e os membros da comunidade sejam educados sobre a necessidade de usar redes mosquiteiras nos seus quartos para evitar infecções por malária, que os jovens sejam educados sobre os efeitos negativos da mineração na sua saúde, na sociedade, nas suas atividades económicas e no ambiente, que os agricultores cujas terras agrícolas são afetadas pelas atividades mineiras sejam devidamente compensados e que o governo ofereça oportunidades de emprego para os jovens em Obuasi, a fim de reduzir o seu envolvimento em atividades mineiras ilegais.
