É bem sabido que emprestar dinheiro aos pobres é muito caro, tanto em termos administrativos como devido aos incumprimentos. No entanto, mesmo as instituições de microfinanças que são instituições com fins lucrativos continuam a emprestar dinheiro aos pobres, e a procura por serviços de microfinanças continua a crescer. Estudar se as instituições de microfinanças subsidiam os clientes pobres mais arriscados ajuda a esclarecer por que algumas instituições se comportam da maneira que se comportam, por exemplo, cobrando taxas de juros altas ou emprestando quantias muito pequenas. As evidências de efeitos de substituição nas instituições de microfinanças implicam que não há um desvio total da missão.
