Many classic English poems have long been translated and introduced to China by trailblazing predecessors. Contemporary versions are also numerous, each with its own strengths. However, just as there is no definitive interpretation of poetry, there can neither be their definitive translation. In reading poetry, I often feel that subtlties are missing or altered somewhat, and feel the urge to offer my own perspective. Additionally, I so often admire the meticulous poetic forms, an essential quality of the poems, that I hope to explore how to capture this essence in Chinese. Thus, I started to translate the poems, experimenting and continuously revising, resulting in the versions presented here. The English and Chinese languages are so far apart, that attempts trying to match the meter and rhyme of poetry in translation from either to the other prove to be particular challenging. Therefore, although my translations are based on the rhythm and cadence of Chinese poetry, I do not intend for them to be bound by strict phonetic constraints of particular 'shi' or 'ci' poetic forms. I have endeavored to maintain the original meaning and sense, as I see it, and convey the rhythmic feeling of the poems. While I do not dare claim to have achieved perfection in both aspects, I strive to achieve a good balance between the two.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides.
