用'回首西州路'这么简短的几个字作这本小册子的书 名，是它即将完成的时候才决定的。在此以前，当笔者每天打开电脑工作的时候，首先映入眼帘的题目都是'我所看见 的那个刚刚逝去的人大人口学重镇：从邬沧萍教授去世说 起，兼评中国人口学霸权主义'。考虑到中国读者大都不喜欢很长文字的书名，所以才改用了它。但是，这样一来，书名 固然是短了，可仅从这几个字看，谁也弄不明白它是一本有 关什么内容的书。弄得不好，还以为是一本小说呢。所以，我把原来的题目当作副标题，也放到封面上了。 关于这本小册子的正文，还有一句话要交代，⸺这不是一本要向读者介绍作者的某项研究成果的书，而是笔者有关回忆的思想记录。
