Educación Superior e inclusión social: aproximaciones conceptuales y perspectivas internacionales es resultado del trabajo desarrollado por una de las principales redes de cooperación académica, en el campo de la Educación, entre América Latina y la Unión Europea, la red RIAIPE: Red Iberoamericana de Investigación en Políticas Educativas. Constituida en 2006, la Red RIAIPE ha llevado a cabo una amplia actividad investigadora en el terreno de las políticas educativas, desarrollando, entre finales de 2010 y diciembre de 2013, el Programa Marco Interuniversitario para la Equidad y la Cohesión Social de las Instituciones de Educación Superior, financiado por la Comisión Europea en el ámbito del Programa Alfa. El libro Educación Superior e inclusión social es fruto de las discusiones teóricas realizadas en el seno de la red RIAIPE durante los trabajos del Programa Marco. Comenzó como un resultado de la necesidad de encontrar plataformas de entendimiento teórico en la arena de los conceptos, para transformarse en un trabajo colaborativo entre investigadores y profesorado de diferentes países y regiones mundiales, de distintas áreas científicas (sociología, historia, educación, pedagogía, filosofía, didáctica, estudios culturales, ciencia política, economía, administración) y de universidades muy diferentes en su dimensión, en su historia y en sus culturas científicas. 10
