On a cold wet November Monday financier Harold Burns walks into Allan Miller's Edinburgh car dealership and demands a test drive. On the road he stabs the salesman and drives the car at high speed into a stone wall. Investigating the incident Detective Sergeant Charlene Fraser of Police Scotland finds herself engaging with Edinburgh's dark side of legalised brothels and private gambling clubs. On his Cambridgeshire estate Bruno Geoffrey has a different perspective on the reported death of Harold Burns, a man he killed dismembered and buried eight years previously. Geoffrey returns to Edinburgh, to protect his own financial investments, bringing him to a deadly confrontation with Fraser.
