My grandparents were married in the late 1890s, at an outstation in a remote part of northwest New South Wales. My grandmother was just 21 when she married. How did a teenager from a working class family become a governess in the 19th century? This novel is my reconstruction of her life from the age of five until her wedding, and draws a picture of life in the Australian outback in the 1890s.
