Este sistema baseia-se numa série de estações onde os participantes têm de resolver casos específicos dentro de limites de tempo predefinidos. Cada estação tem por objetivo avaliar o domínio de competências-chave, dividindo-as em tarefas avaliáveis individualmente, abrangendo assim os domínios do conhecimento, do saber-fazer e até das competências interpessoais.Aclamado pela sua eficácia, fiabilidade e pertinência no contexto da avaliação clínica, o ECOSM é um instrumento justo e autêntico de avaliação formativa e normativa. Apesar do seu sucesso noutros contextos, não foi ainda realizada qualquer investigação sobre a sua aplicação específica em anatomia patológica.
