Le mouvement des Focolari, d’inspiration religieuse, né en Europe au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, a inspiré la création d’un projet à caractère économique qui a dépassé les objectifs de sa création pour devenir une action sociale : le projet Économie de communion (EdC). Créée au Brésil par Chiara Lubich en 1991, l’EdC vise à créer des pôles d’entreprises composés d’initiatives qui partagent un objectif commun : mettre les bénéfices générés par leurs activités économiques au service de la société. Quelques années après sa création, le projet compte un nombre considérable de pôles et d’entreprises adhérentes au Brésil et dans le monde, et transforme tous les aspects liés aux relations économiques et sociales, suscitant l’intérêt des chercheurs en économie, administration, sociologie, psychologie, anthropologie et autres disciplines connexes. Le projet n’a pas pour ambition de se présenter comme une alternative au mode de production actuel. Au contraire, c’est l’efficacité de ses entreprises et leur capacité à générer de bons résultats qui mesurent l’efficacité du projet et permettent son succès.
