Con lo sviluppo della scienza economica e l’emergere dell’analisi utilitaristica, il comportamento degli agenti economici viene compreso dalla teoria moderna attraverso la premessa che gli individui sono autointeressati e che la misura del benessere sociale è legata al consumo. Ci rifacciamo alla visione dell’economista Amartya Sen per contrastare questa visione del benessere e chiarire le debolezze dell’analisi utilitaristica. Tuttavia, non vogliamo negare l’importanza degli attuali modelli di analisi economica. L’obiettivo principale di questo lavoro è quello di promuovere un dibattito sul fatto che la visione utilitaristica dell’interesse personale sia sufficiente a prevedere e spiegare le decisioni economiche. Sebbene sia un forte motivatore delle azioni, un’altra parte delle motivazioni può essere legata a standard etici e morali, e può persino influenzare l’agente economico a privarsi di vantaggi in certe transazioni economiche per difendere cause di interesse collettivo. L’etica può spiegare anche il comportamento umano? Se così fosse, spetterebbe alla scienza economica, alleata allo studio dell’etica, rafforzare i propri modelli e persino rivedere la propria visione utilitaristica del benessere.
