A Selection of 44 poems featuring love from the 'Book of Songs', the first collection of poetry from ancient China, is presented in this book, annotated and translated into vernacular, and recommended to lovers of classical poetry. We turn to every page of these poems today and feel the magic of love travel through time and space, just as they have touched and nurtured countless generations of ancestors, even though they were written between 2,600 and 3,100 years ago. It is evident that long-standing ancestors believe in love in its most straightforward and sincere form, and there is a great deal of conviction, persistence, and bravery in how they think about it. Throughout the ages, their writings left us with many well-known masterpieces. That’s because they are the revelation of true feelings derived from the experience and feelings of life and are by no means a game of contrived words and emotions.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

Love Poems from Weijin Nanbei Dynasties
    River Horns
