Die Hochschulbibliotheken spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Bereitstellung der erforderlichen Informationen für die Nutzer von Ingenieurwissenschaften. Früher haben Bibliotheken mit ihren verschiedenen Arten von gedruckten Informationsquellen wie Büchern, Zeitschriften, Konferenzberichten, Broschüren, Normen, Patenten usw. ihren Benutzern Informationsdienste angeboten. Doch aufgrund der Entwicklungen in der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie wurden in den Bibliotheken zusätzlich zu den bereits vorhandenen gedruckten Dokumenten neue Arten von Dokumenten, so genannte e-Quellen, eingeführt. Die Informationen in dieser Art von Dokumenten sind in digitaler Form gespeichert. Zu den verschiedenen Kategorien von E-Ressourcen gehören E-Books, E-Journals, Online-Volltextdatenbanken, bibliografische Online-Datenbanken, E-Theses und E-Dissertationen, Web-OPAC, E-Magazine, E-News usw. Diese sind entweder als DVDs, CD-ROMs und Blue-Ray-Discs oder als Online-Quellen erhältlich. Diese e-Quellen erleichtern die Speicherung, Verarbeitung und den Abruf von Informationen wesentlich schneller als herkömmliche gedruckte Dokumente. Um den Nutzern umfassende und aktuelle Informationen zur Verfügung zu stellen, ist es unumgänglich, diese Quellen zu beschaffen.
