这本书的内容取自作者正在写作的《从五四到六四：20 世纪中国专制主义批判》（6 卷本）的第二卷第九章。这一章主题集中，自成系统，为公众之所需，12 万字的篇幅又正好满足一本小册子的容量，所以拎出这一章先行出版。书中详细讨论了第一次国共合作的缘起、合作中的冲突、为什么最后会走向分裂。作者的基本结论是：共产国际和中共的激进阶级革命战略与国民党温和的阶级调和战略不相容，是导致 1924~1927 年国共合作失败的根本原因，蒋介石'四一二清党'不过是这个冲突演变的结果而已。这个过程跌宕起伏，惊心动魄，充满了戏剧性。且目前占有的资料（包括共产国际的原始档案、共产党重要领导人的回忆、国民党方面的材料特别是蒋介石本人日记）已经让研究者可以较为准确地重新描述这段历史，并发现背后的真实逻辑。
