Wałek napędowy jest w zasadzie elementem mechanicznym, który przenosi moment obrotowy i obroty i służy do łączenia innych elementów mechanicznych układu napędowego, które nie mogą być połączone w sposób bezpośredni ze względu na odległość lub z innego powodu, tj. konieczność umożliwienia ruchu względnego między nimi. Ze względu na nośniki momentu obrotowego, wały napędowe poddawane są naprężeniom skręcającym i ścinającym, które odpowiadają różnicy między momentem wejściowym a obciążeniem. Dlatego też wał napędowy musi być wystarczająco mocny, aby wytrzymać te naprężenia, unikając jednocześnie zbyt dużego dodatkowego ciężaru, który z kolei zwiększyłby ich bezwładność. Projekt dotyczy zastąpienia konwencjonalnego wału napędowego z materiału stalowego kompozytem węglowym o wysokiej wytrzymałości. Stalowy wał napędowy jest projektowany przy użyciu oprogramowania CAD na potrzeby analizy statycznej, wyboczeniowej i modalnej obu wałów napędowych przy użyciu oprogramowania ANSYS. Optymalizacja projektu została przeprowadzona na końcu, co wykazało znaczną potencjalną poprawę wydajności wału napędowego. W bieżącej pracy podjęto próbę oszacowania ugięcia, naprężeń i częstotliwości drgań własnych pod obciążeniem.
