Około 60-70% chorych na cukrzycę wykazuje łagodne lub ciężkie formy uszkodzenia układu nerwowego. Zrozumienie związku między cukrzycą typu 2 a chorobą Alzheimera staje się coraz ważniejsze. Niniejsze badanie było próbą zwrócenia uwagi na kilka aspektów związanych z cukrzycą typu 2, które przyczyniają się do choroby Alzheimera i odwrotnie. Ponadto niniejsze badanie ujawniło znaczenie Aβ40, Aβ42, insuliny, HbA1c, zaburzeń profilu lipidowego, CRP, D-dimeru i magnezu w dwukierunkowym związku między cukrzycą typu 2 a patogenezą choroby Alzheimera, która jest napędzana przez ich związek, a zatem zasugerowano możliwość uzależnienia od amyloidu beta jako biochemicznego markera cukrzycy typu 2 u pacjentów z chorobą Alzheimera. Również w przyszłości nowe możliwości terapeutyczne, takie jak neutralizacja Aβ przez przeciwciała anty-Aβ, mogą być nową strategią walki z insulinoopornością i cukrzycą.
