A monografia é dedicada ao estudo do método de dureza projectiva dos materiais, com ênfase na utilização de um indentador esférico-cónico na nano e micro-gama. São considerados os principais métodos de medição da dureza (Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell, Martens) e os conceitos de dureza projectiva, superficial e global. Os materiais, equipamentos e métodos de cálculo da dureza projectiva reduzida e não reduzida são descritos em pormenor. É apresentado um grande número de diagramas de indentação para várias amostras de aço com diferentes durezas e microestruturas. Estes diagramas são obtidos por indentação de amostras padrão que são fornecidas com machos de dureza Brinell e estão amplamente disponíveis na maioria das empresas de construção de máquinas. Os autores recomendam que estes diagramas sejam utilizados por outros investigadores que não tenham possibilidade de os criar. Os resultados dos estudos experimentais são analisados, os cálculos são efectuados e são tiradas conclusões sobre a viabilidade da utilização de métodos de dureza de projeção na investigação moderna da ciência dos materiais.
