Es ist eine bekannte Eigentümlichkeit der deutschen Kunst, dass sie in ungleich grösserem Ausrnass Anregungen empfing, als sie selbst gab. Umsomehr verdient es unsere Aufmerksamkeit, wenn wir einen Fall beobachten können, wo das Verhältnis zum Ausland anders zu liegen scheint, wo wir Auswirkungen deutschen künstlerischen Schaffens in den Leistungen fremder Länder wie­ derfinden. Schon lange ist es zu einer allgemein anerkannten Tatsache geworden, dass die Wirkung, die von Dürer ausging, nicht an den Grenzen des deutschen Kunstgebietes Halt machte, sondern dass sie in dem künstlerischen Schaffen auch ausserdeutscher Natio­ nen, in erster Linie der Italiener 1), der Franzosen 2) und Nieder­ länder ihre Spuren zurückliess, und dass diese Wirkung nicht hin­ ter der von jeher viel mehr beachteten Abhängigkeit Dürers selbst vom Ausland 3) zurückbleibt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit ist der Versuch unternommen, eines dieser Gebiete, die Niederlande, herauszugreifen, um den Umfang und die besondere Art der Abhängigkeit niederländischer Künst­ ler von Dürer in zusammenfassender Weise zu untersuchen.
