Osmogen absorbuje wodę z otaczającego środowiska przez membranę , która jest przepuszczalna dla wody, ale nieprzepuszczalna dla leku.Lek jest uwalniany w postaci roztworu lub zawiesiny w czasie. Osmotyczne systemy dostarczania leków są obiecującą strategią kontrolowanego dostarczania leków. System jest niezależny od czynników jelitowych i jest regulowany tylko przez charakter preparatu. Większość leków stosowanych w tego typu systemach ma krótki okres półtrwania, są bardzo silne i wymagają długotrwałegostosowania .
