O efeito da dívida externa sobre o crescimento econômico tem estado entre as questões controversas. Com base em dados de painel de 44 países da África Subsaariana por um período de mais de 30 anos, este livro revela que o estoque da dívida externa e os serviços da dívida têm um impacto negativo estatisticamente significativo sobre o crescimento econômico, especialmente em níveis mais elevados de dívida / PIB Razão. O nível de maximização do crescimento do estoque da dívida varia de 25% a 45% do PIB. Além disso, a dívida externa afetou o crescimento ao afetar adversamente a formação de capital humano. Também se constatou que os pagamentos do serviço da dívida têm efeitos de 'exclusão' sobre o investimento privado.
