Zurückzuführen ist dieser Anstieg auf verschiedene Gründe, wie beispielsweise der gestiegenen Emanzipation der Frauen, der wachsenden Zahl allein erziehender Mütter und nicht zuletzt wegen des Bedarfs zusätzlicher Einkommen in der Familie. Durch diesen wachsenden Anteil an erwerbstätigen Frauen und die dadurch zunehmende Beobachtung von Diskriminierung gegenüber Frauen fühlten sich die meisten Regierungen industrialisierter Länder dazu veranlasst, den Grundsatz „Equal Pay for Equal Work' in ihren Gesetzen zu verankern. Dieser Sachverhalt und die Versuche der Wirtschaft die Gleichstellungsgrundsätze durch horizontale und vertikale Segregation zu umgehen, wird in dieser Arbeit, mit Bezug auf eine Studie von David Neumark von der Michigan State University untersucht.
