Ogni anno, 19 milioni di aborti praticati in condizioni precarie causano la morte di 68.000 donne. Infatti, il 49% degli aborti nel mondo è 'a rischio', sia perché l’interruzione volontaria di gravidanza (IVG) è vietata nel Paese, sia per la mancanza di accesso alle strutture sanitarie. Nel 2015, il 40% delle donne in età fertile viveva in paesi in cui l’aborto è limitato o inaccessibile. In America Latina e nei Caraibi, l’IVG è ancora oggetto di divieti o di numerose limitazioni di accesso (fisiche, economiche, geografiche, religiose, culturali, ecc.) e, più in generale, di un silenzio diffuso. Eppure la questione dell’aborto si inserisce anche in una logica globale di sviluppo, di riduzione delle disuguaglianze e di generalizzazione dell’accesso alla sanità pubblica per tutti. Sebbene le iniziative della società civile a favore dei diritti riproduttivi e sessuali siano incoraggianti, permangono numerose barriere. Questo libro si propone di studiare le diverse legislazioni in materia di accesso all’aborto, ma anche le loro origini e le loro conseguenze per la salute delle donne.
