Todos os anos, 19 milhões de abortos realizados em condições precárias causam a morte de 68 000 mulheres. De facto, 49% dos abortos no mundo são de risco, seja porque a interrupção voluntária da gravidez (IVG) é proibida no país, seja por falta de acesso a estruturas médicas. Em 2015, 40% das mulheres em idade fértil viviam em países onde o aborto é restrito ou inacessível. Na América Latina e nas Caraíbas, a IVG continua a ser alvo de proibições ou de inúmeras restrições de acesso (físicas, económicas, geográficas, religiosas, culturais, etc.) e, de forma mais geral, de um silêncio generalizado. No entanto, a questão do aborto insere-se também numa lógica global de desenvolvimento, de redução das desigualdades e de generalização do acesso à saúde pública para todos. Embora as iniciativas da sociedade civil em prol dos direitos reprodutivos e sexuais sejam encorajadoras, persistem inúmeras barreiras. Este livro propõe-se a estudar as diferentes legislações em matéria de acesso ao aborto, mas também as suas origens e consequências para a saúde das mulheres.
