L’urbanizzazione è diventata un fenomeno ineludibile negli ultimi decenni in Costa d’Avorio. Secondo l’INS (2014, p.45), il tasso di urbanizzazione in Costa d’Avorio è passato dal 32,1% nel 1975 al 45,3% nel 1998, poi al 50,3% nel 2014. Si stima che questo tasso raggiungerà il 57% nel 2018 (BNETD. 2015, p.7). Questa urbanizzazione richiede una pianificazione e una serie di azioni da intraprendere per soddisfare le aspirazioni di una popolazione urbana sempre più in crescita. Tra le esigenze di questa popolazione, la questione dell’accesso all’alloggio si pone in modo acuto, come nel caso della città di Bouaké. Dal 2012, la notevole crescita urbana di Bouaké ha portato a una vera e propria crisi abitativa. Caratterizzata da uno squilibrio tra domanda e offerta di alloggi dignitosi, la crisi abitativa si manifesta anche con l’impennata del costo degli affitti e la proliferazione di alloggi precari e malsani. Il fallimento del sistema igienico-sanitario in questi insediamenti informali è un fattore di deterioramento dell’ambiente di vita della popolazione di Bouaké.
