Lo studio utilizza quattro Indagini demografiche e sanitarie (DHS) condotte nel 1988, 1994, 1999 e 2005 in Zimbabwe per esaminare i differenziali socioeconomici della fertilità nel tempo. I tassi di fertilità del periodo (specifici per età e la fertilità totale), i tassi di fertilità della coorte nel periodo (CPFR), i rapporti di progressione della parità proiettati (PPR proiettati) e i metodi di regressione logistica sono utilizzati nell’analisi, nel complesso, per valutare la natura della transizione della fertilità. L’analisi mostra un’associazione inversa tra residenza urbana, istruzione e status economico, misurata in base alla proprietà dei beni delle famiglie, e la fertilità basata sulle stime di fertilità totale (TFR), CPFR e PPRs proiettate. Un’ulteriore analisi degli effetti netti dello stato economico e dell’istruzione utilizzando regressioni logistiche multivariate suggerisce che le probabilità di avere un figlio (non avere un figlio) diminuiscono (aumentano) con lo stato economico e l’istruzione. Nel complesso, anche dopo aver controllato per varie variabili socioeconomiche la fertilità diminuisce con un livello crescente di istruzione e/o di status economico.
