Tigris und Euphrat entspringen in den Gebirgszügen Armeniens und der Türkei. Der Tigris hat im Osten eine Länge von 1 848 km, bevor er sich von Westen her über fast 110 km mit dem Euphrat vereinigt und in den Persischen Golf mündet. An den Ufern des Tigris lagen einst die Hauptstädte des alten assyrischen Reiches wie Ninive, Calah und Asshur. Die moderne Hauptstadt des Irak, Bagdad, liegt heute an diesem Fluss. Der Euphrat, der größte Fluss der Region, der im Alten Testament oft einfach 'der Fluss' genannt wird (z. B. Deuteronomium 11,24, im Hebräischen kommt der Name 'Euphrat' nicht vor), hat eine Länge von 2 871 km, ist größtenteils mit Schiffen befahrbar und ideal für Handel und Verkehr. Die antiken Städte Carchemish, Mari, Babylon und Ur lagen an seinen Ufern.
