Funktionell liefern Gene die Informationen, die die grundlegenden biologischen und physiologischen Aktivitäten von Zellen steuern und unser Verhalten in Bezug auf Veränderungen in unserer Umwelt beeinflussen. CYP2A6-Varianten hemmen und reduzieren die Nikotinabhängigkeit auf unterschiedliche Weise und spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Nikotinaufnahme, -verteilung und -ausscheidung, was auf ihr klinisches Potenzial hindeutet. Außerdem wurden CYP2A6-Varianten in epidemiologischen quantitativen und humanen Laborstudien mit dem Rauchverhalten, der Entwicklung einer Nikotinabhängigkeit und der Behandlung in Verbindung gebracht. In dieser aktuellen Studie scheint es, dass die enzymatischen Aktivitäten der CYP2A6-Varianten mit Variationen im Rauchverhalten korrelieren und mit Nikotinbehandlungen in Zusammenhang stehen, da sie in der Lage sind, Nikotin zu metabolisieren, sowie mit dem Einsatz von Medikamenten bei der Behandlung von Nikotinsucht.
