Das Metabolische Syndrom (MS) lässt sich durch eine Gruppe von Risikofaktoren für Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen charakterisieren, die mit der zentralen Fettverteilung und der Insulinresistenz zusammenhängen. Die Adipositas nimmt rapide zu und steht in direktem Zusammenhang mit dem MetS, zu dessen Komplikationen Diabetes mellitus Typ II, Hypercholesterinämie und Bluthochdruck gehören. Die Behandlung von MetS basiert hauptsächlich auf einer Änderung des Lebensstils zur Gewichtsreduzierung und, falls erforderlich, auf einer medikamentösen Behandlung von Bluthochdruck, Diabetes mellitus und Dyslipidämie, da diese als Risikofaktoren für Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen gelten.
