Das Buch geht aus von Alltagsproblemen der Nutzung der neuen Medien in der Familie und führt hin zur Diskussion der psychologischen Merkmale der Kommunikation und Interaktion. Das schließt insbesondere Fragen der individuellen Persönlichkeitseinstellungen zur Computernutzung sowie der Nutzung von Bildschirmspielen in der Familie ein. Probleme und Chancen, die sich aus der Telearbeit in der Familie und der Mitwirkung von Kindern in den Medien ergeben, werden ebenfalls diskutiert. Dabei wird versucht, die neusten technischen Entwicklungen bzw. Möglichkeiten zu berücksichtigen, auch wenn diese vorerst nur von wenigen genutzt werden. Die Diskussion stützt sich zum Teil auf eigene empirische Untersuchungen an der Universität Düsseldorf.
