Das dreibändige Werk 'Die literarische Moderne in Europa' verläßt daher den Weg der herkömmlichen literaturhistorisch-enzyklopädischen Darstellung und verlegt statt dessen den Schwerpunkt auf die Analyse grundsätzlicher literaturtheoretischer, poetologischer und philosophischer Fragen, die sich bei einer Betrachtung der Literatur im gesamteuropäischen Kontext ergeben.Die Einzeluntersuchungen des ersten Bandes wollen nicht eine Geschichte der literarischen Prosa als Gattung rekonstruieren, sondern sie zeigen mit Blick auf den Zerfall traditioneller, 'realistischer' Einheiten wie Handlung, Charakter und Individuum in den modernen Romanen und Erzählungen die Geschichte der Auseinandersetzung dieser Literatur mit den von der Tradition vorgegebenen Begriffen Gattung, Nationalliteratur, Autor und Werk.
