Jahrhunderts, getragen von den Postulaten Freiheit, Gleichheit sowie Brüderlichkeit, markiert einen der Höhepunkte einer epochemachenden gesamteuropäischen Bewegung: der Aufklärung des Bürgertums. Doch schon bald wurde offensichtlich, „daß das Postulat der Gleichheit aller Menschen, wie es das ‚aufgeklärte’ Denken hervorbrachte, keineswegs selbstverständlich die Maxime einer Gleichheit von Mann und Frau einschloß.' War der Frau im Rahmen der Frühaufklärung weitestgehend die gleiche Bildungsfähigkeit wie dem Mann zugesprochen worden, wurde sie nun zurück in ihre traditionelle Hausfrauen- und Mutterrolle gedrängt.
