Der Begriff „Wildtiere' bezieht sich traditionell auf nicht domestizierte Tierarten, umfasst jedoch mittlerweile alle Pflanzen, Pilze und anderen Organismen, die in einem Gebiet wild wachsen oder leben, ohne von Menschen eingeführt worden zu sein. Gorals gehören ebenso wie Hirsche, Antilopen und Schafe/Ziegen zur Unterordnung Ruminantia. Die Mitglieder dieser Unterordnung haben eine Form von Hörnern (die auf knöchernen Stielen oder Kernen wachsen und bei Männchen besonders ausgeprägt sind), selenodonte Zähne, die für das Zermahlen von Nahrung mit einer Seitwärtsbewegung spezialisiert sind, und einen mehrkammerigen Magen, wobei der Verdauungsprozess das Wiederkäuen von teilweise verdauter Nahrung und das Kauen von Wiederkäuzeug umfasst.
