Sie gehörte scheinbar dem besseren Mittelstande an und machte sofort einen sehr guten Eindruck auf den Detektiv. Er hielt sie für eine pensionierte Beamtenwitwe. Leute meiner Art, begann sie, leben am liebsten möglichst still und zurückgezogen. Wenn ich mich trotzdem an die Polizei wende, begreifen Sie also, daß mir etwas ganz Seltsames begegnet sein muß. Aber ich möchte doch vor allem darum bitten, daß meine Name nicht mit der Angelegenheit in Verbindung gebracht wird.'
