Auslöser dieser Entwicklung sollten aufrechter Gang, Werkzeugherstellung und Hirnwachstum gewesen sein.Doch so einfach stellt sich die Sachlage nach aktueller Forschung nicht mehr dar: Neue Fossil- und Werkzeugfunde zeigen, dass Vormenschen sich schon Millionen Jahre auf zwei Beinen fortbewegten – ohne nachweisbare Fortentwicklung oder wachsende Gehirne; dass die Werkzeugherstellung älter ist als die Gattung Homo; dass über lange Zeiträume mehrere Menschenarten parallel existierten. Und spätestens die Paläogenetik machte aus dem bisherigen Stammbaum einen verzweigten Busch mit bisher unbekannten Menschenarten, die sich nachweislich untereinander kreuzten.Andere Hypothesen zur Menschwerdung waren nötig. Diese Neuauflage des Buches zeichnet den aktuellen Stand der Forschung nach und versucht, aus den einzelnen Mosaiksteinen ein Gesamtbild der Menschwerdung zusammenzusetzen, wobei aktuelle Funde und neueste Theorien eingearbeitet wurden.
