​Der Bereich des Wohnens stellt ein Kernelement der öffentlichen Daseinsvorsorge in der europäischen Stadt dar. Die Privatisierung kommunaler Wohnungsbestände könnte daher das Modell der europäischen Stadt grundlegend in Frage stellen. Sebastian Klus zeigt, dass sich aber gerade auch in der Auseinandersetzung um die Privatisierung Perspektiven eröffnen, die auf die Zukunftsfähigkeit der europäischen Stadt verweisen. Diese beziehen sich auf die Möglichkeit der Stadt auch unter schwierigen Rahmenbedingungen als eigenständiger politischer Akteur zu agieren und die Potenziale der bürgerschaftlichen Selbstverwaltung. Dies belegt der Autor anhand einer Fallstudie über den Konflikt um den (letztlich gescheiterten) Verkauf des städtischen Wohnungsunternehmens in Freiburg und seine Auswirkungen.
