Die aktuelle Weltwirtschaftskrise hatte Auswirkungen auf die Region Südosteuropa (SEE), die sich in einer Übergangsphase befand. Entsprechend seinen eigenen Merkmalen sollte der Bankensektor als Teil des Finanzsektors als Puffer gegen die negativen Auswirkungen der Krise und als Motor der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung eines Landes fungieren. Gleichzeitig war der Bankensektor als Ursache der Rezession am stärksten von den negativen Auswirkungen der Krise betroffen. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten vor der Krise gab es einen globalen Trend zur Konsolidierung der Finanzmärkte. Faktoren, die den Prozess der Fusionen und Übernahmen auf den Finanzmärkten erleichterten, waren globale Phänomene, technologische Innovationen sowie die Liberalisierung und Deregulierung der Märkte. Eine abschließende Einschätzung der Auswirkungen der größten Akteure auf den SEE-Bankenmarkt (die analysierten Länder sind: Serbien, Kroatien, Bosnien und Herzegowina, Montenegro, Rumänien, Bulgarien, Mazedonien und Albanien) lässt sich erst nach einer Analyse des Heimatmarktes im Vergleich zu anderen Bankenmärkten vornehmen.
