Beim Erlernen eines neuen Begriffs, eines neuen Wissens, einer Handlungsweise oder eines Verhaltens macht der Mensch immer Fehler. Daher ist es gerechtfertigt, dass die heutigen Methoden des Fremdsprachenunterrichts, mit Ausnahme der audio-oralen und situativen Methoden, Fehler als ein natürliches Phänomen des Lernens, als untrennbar mit dieser Tätigkeit verbunden, betrachten. Diese Überzeugung vertreten unter anderem die Didaktiker Perdue (1980) und Brown (1987) mit folgenden klaren Worten: Wenn das Erlernen von Französisch als Fremdsprache eine kognitive Aktivität ist, die darin besteht, Hypothesen über die Strukturen dieser Sprache aufzustellen und zu überprüfen, wird der Lernende zwangsläufig Fehler machen', sagt der erste; während der zweite behauptet, dass die Lernenden beim Erlernen einer Sprache, sei sie nun Erstsprache (L1), Zweitsprache (L2) oder Fremdsprache (L3), immer Fehler machen.Das Erlernen von Französisch als Zweitsprache ist immer mit Fehlern verbunden, unabhängig von der Referenzsprache und den Fähigkeiten der Lernenden. Diese Fehler treten sowohl in der mündlichen als auch in der schriftlichen Sprache auf.
