Ludność cierpi z powodu poważnych problemów spowodowanych niedoborem wody, które uniemożliwiają produkcję rolną, a w konsekwencji przetrwanie w godnych warunkach, powodując głód i nędzę. Celem badania było określenie skutków niedoboru wody dla gospodarki nawadnianego obszaru São Gonçalo w gminie Sousa w stanie Paraíba w latach 2012-2016. Praca została przeprowadzona poprzez ankiety przeprowadzone za uprzednią zgodą mieszkańców trzech osiedli i dzielnicy São Gonçalo. Odwiedzono również Krajowy Departament Robót Przeciwdrogowych oraz Agencję Wykonawczą ds. Gospodarki Wodnej stanu Paraíba w celu zebrania danych dotyczących gospodarki obszaru nawadnianego, informacji o produkcji i wielkości zbiornika wodnego São Gonçalo. Odnotowano straty w produkcji bananów, a zwłaszcza kokosów; wzrosło bezrobocie, co spowodowało wzrost migracji ludności z obszarów wiejskich i przemocy, w tym wysoką liczbę napadów. Zagrożenie brakiem wody powoduje inne zagrożenia: gospodarcze, społeczne i środowiskowe, ograniczając rozwój ludności zamieszkującej obszary półpustynne.
