O termo 'ligação homem-animal' é utilizado para descrever a relação entre as pessoas e os seus animais de estimação. Uma zoonose é qualquer doença infecciosa que pode ser transmitida naturalmente de animais, tanto selvagens como domésticos, para o ser humano. Os cães partilham estreitamente o ambiente doméstico com os seres humanos e têm potencial para atuar como fontes e sentinelas de um vasto espetro de infecções zoonóticas.
